Start-ups offered space to work in Newcastle’s coolest offices

NBS hopes to attract fledging tech firms to the Newcastle’s Old Post Office, which won an award earlier this year

Fledgling firms could get the chance to work in one of the North’s coolest offices based in Newcastle following its £5.8m redevelopment.

The interior of the Old Post Office on St Nicholas Street now looks very different to when it first served customers in the 19th Century, following a complete transformation spearheaded by NBS, which is now based inside the Grade II building.

The makeover resulted in the building being recognised as one of the best workplaces in the North at the annual British Council for Offices (BCO), triumphing as winner of the Best Refurbished and Recycled Workplace.

Now NBS is hoping to attract digital and technology start-ups to its state-of-the-art incubator space, created as part of the multimillion-pound redevelopment.

The units have a range of unique features, such as suspended ceilings, high quality office furniture, a separate meeting room and a manned reception, and NBS hopes to draw in local digital and tech start-ups with clients in the built environment sector.

“We are really proud of The Old Post Office and I am delighted that, in addition to providing a great space for our own colleagues to work, we can provide incubator space for other businesses to grow and flourish. We were a start-up business once and I know how important the right kind of accommodation is for new and expanding businesses.”

At present, there are five units available which range from one to two, and six people spaces, or 119 – 408 square foot, with an asking rent of £17.50 per square foot.

Chris Pearson, partner at Gavin Black and Partners, is handling the letting.

“The Old Post Office is unusual for the city’s historic core, in that its two-storey recessed entrance gives the Grade II listed building a tremendous presence. We’re delighted to have been appointed to handling this listing and are looking forward to showing off the superior specification this iconic building has to offer.”
