Dynamites Winners Blog – Baltic Apprenticeships

Who are Baltic Apprenticeships?
Baltic Apprenticeships are a specialist provider of digital and tech apprenticeships. We’re based in Newton Aycliffe and work with employers across the whole of the North East and beyond to recruit and train the next generation of data analysts, digital marketers, IT technicians, and software developers.

We work with over 200 employers across the North East, and in the last 5 years have created over 700 tech apprenticeships in the region, which is something we’re really proud of.

What do you think have been the main benefits of entering the awards?
The Dynamites are a fantastic way to share your achievements and to learn about what other people are doing in the region.

But more than that, I think the process of putting together the nomination really helped us to realise just how far we’ve come as an organisation. Both in terms of the service we deliver, and the way we’ve grown and developed our team through apprenticeships and further training. Through entering the awards, we’ve been able to take the time to reflect on our achievements and to recognise the role that every single person at Baltic has played in our story so far – it’s been an invaluable experience overall!

When your name was read out at the awards evening, how did it feel?
Skills development is everything we do and everything we are as an organisation, so it was an amazing feeling to be recognised through the Skills Developer award again this year. We were shortlisted alongside some brilliant people, so we didn’t think it’d be our name on the card at all… but when it was read out, I think you could hear the cheers from our table over in Gateshead!

What did you think of the awards evening?
The awards evening was amazing and we enjoyed every minute of it! After so many months of online networking and video calls, it was incredible to be in a room with some brilliant people, celebrate successes, and hear about some exciting projects.

What advice would you give people who are thinking of entering the awards?
Choose your category carefully, and – at risk of sounding like my old headteacher – read the questions before you start! You’ll get more out of the process and have a stronger chance of success if you tailor everything to the questions on the nomination form. The Dynamites are laser-focused on celebrating real impact within the North East, so don’t be tempted to copy and paste from more general award or grant applications.

What are your hopes for the future of the North East’s tech industry?
I’ve been working in and around the North East’s tech industry for over 5 years now, and in that time things have gone from strength to strength, despite everything Covid has thrown at us. However, to continue to grow and succeed, the North East needs to hang onto the people who make it great, and also nurture new and emerging talent. Apprenticeships could play such an amazing role here, both in terms of talent development and broadening access to the digital industries, if only more employers could realise the power of growing your own.
