Why did you join Thoughtworks?
Renee Hawkins – Head of Professional Services at Thoughtworks UK

Renee joined Thoughtworks in 2004 and has been a strong leader for our clients and our worldwide organization. She’s worn many different hats throughout her career from Project Manager to Client Principal and is now the Head of Professional Services for our UK business. Renee is passionate about diversity and inclusivity. She is an executive sponsor for the UK Race and Ethnicity Affinity group as well as an advocate for women and underrepresented gender minorities. She holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering, has recently been a finalist for Women in Tech Excellence Awards – Woman of the Year: Tech and has worked in North America, Europe, India, China, Hong Kong and Singapore.

I wanted to work for an organization that had exceptional talent and who were thinking outside of the box, pushing boundaries and solving some of the industry’s toughest technical problems. Once I found my feet at Thoughtworks, the learning culture and focus on creating extraordinary impact on the world has kept me here for the last 17 years”

What are the benefits of basing your business in the North East?
Our mission is to create an extraordinary impact on the world through our culture and technology excellence. We believe that the North-East offers Thoughtworks’ huge opportunities. We aim to significantly invest in new employees and focus on creating a long-term sustainable team that champions an equitable, reflective and inclusive society. An advantage of the North-East is access to talent and a strong pipeline of graduates with software engineering and data capabilities from Newcastle University, Northumbria University and Durham University as well as the Centre for Innovation and Data which is a magnet for talent as well. This is key as we look to expand our existing Government work in the North-East. We also work across a variety of financial services and fintech companies and having a base in the North-East will help us grow this sector. We have done award winning work in the energy sector with VAKT, a consortium of leading energy companies and banks, with the aim of transforming the global commodities trading industry through blockchain technology. We aim to partner with North-East based organizations to accelerate the region’s renewable energy credentials.

What has the past 12 months taught you?
Culture is key. As society rebuilds following the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, businesses find themselves faced with a new reality. Employees have reconsidered their working situation, craving more of the work life balance which lockdown and remote working has offered. Thoughtworks is focusing on key cultural initiatives including hybrid working, a well-being strategy including a focus on mental health and learning & development.

What are your post COVID business objectives?
COVID put digital transformation on the agenda for many businesses. Thoughtworks helps our customers to thrive as digital businesses. We will continue to invest in building strong and trusting partnerships with our clients. One of our focus areas is continuing to attract the best talent in a competitive talent market. We continue to invest in our capabilities, especially in areas such as data and cloud. We will continue to move the dial on our culture.
