John Fitzgerald

Newcastle University

John heads the School of Computing at Newcastle University. An expert on the design of cyber-physical systems, the impact of his research has been felt in the development of new tools applied commercially in areas as diverse as firmware design and agricultural robotics, and from Europe to Asia. From working as Design and V&V manager in a successful start-up,  he came back to academia in 2003 and later led for the School on the design of the multi-award winning Urban Sciences Building – the first major university building at Newcastle Helix and now the home of three national research centres and two centres for doctoral training in tech sectors.

Nick leads the Accenture Security Group for UKI. From the onset of his career as a Rocket Motor and Explosives Engineer, he has loved to explore, fix and build.  In his role as Managing Director of Accenture Security for the UK and Ireland, he has worked with many clients to help them navigate the changes in their Security capabilities to become more resilient, which spans strategic consulting, proactive risk management and digital identity to cyber defence, response and remediation services and managed security services – across all industries.

Nick has spent more than 23 years at Accenture and led many practices including: Strategy UKI, Digital UKI, ASEAN Technology, APAC Emerging Technology, Korea Technology, Infrastructure Consulting UKI, Strategic IT Effectiveness (SITE) UKI.

Susan has enjoyed 27 years in Business and Technology and has found her calling at Waterstons Ltd as the CEO. Originally from the North East, Susan started her career as a graduate at the Newcastle based Prescription Pricing Authority where she cut her teeth as an analyst programmer. Progressing to First Direct before moving to UBS Investment Bank for 12 years, succeeding to Executive Director and managing extensive global change programmes.

Anthony Smith (CISSP, CISM) is a Cyber Security professional with 30 years experience. His career started in the RAF working at Whitehall on cryptographic systems. He later managed the teams responsible for the secure IT at the UK’s Primary War Headquarters and Nato North West Europe. Anthony is currently the IS Security Manager at Northumbrian Water with responsibility for all areas of IT and OT Security and is Chairman of the Water-UK IT Security Managers Group.

Andrew Lynn

Andrew joined SRM in 2008 and is Lead Consultant for the Test and Exercise service. He has worked in Information Security for over 20 years. In this time, Andrew has achieved a range of qualifications and developed unrivalled knowledge in his field working on high level solutions for clients. During the early part of his career, Andrew was involved in security audit and penetration testing, becoming one of the first CHECK Team Leaders.

In his role as a consultant at SRM, Andrew is involved in assessing practical and effective security management implementations, including risk assessments, policies, procedures and technical control implementation. By taking an holistic approach to a client’s information security strategy, Andrew and his team are able to maintain a focus on business deliverables and add genuine value.

Andrew qualified as a PCI DSS QSA and then went on to become a PA-QSA and a PFI, leading several complex forensic investigations in the card payment arena. Andrew was a CLAS Consultant and qualified under the CCP scheme as a Senior Security and Information Risk Advisor (SIRA). Andrew is currently also an ISO27001 Lead Auditor and holds Certified Information Security Manager (CISM) certification.

Caroline Churchill


Caroline specialises in non-contentious commercial, technology and data protection work and manages the firm’s technology practice in the North East. Her practice involves advising on a wide variety of commercial contracts including distribution, agency and franchising arrangements, contractual joint ventures, terms and conditions of supply, licensing and manufacturing arrangements, outsourcing agreements (IT and BPO), cloud computing, systems integration, general IP and e-commerce.

As an experienced practitioner of data protection law, Caroline advises clients across a range of sectors on all aspects of compliance within data protection, cybersecurity and privacy law.
